    Phosphorus is removed from the waste water in two ways: by accumulation of phosphates in the cells of microorganisms of activated sludge through alternating anaerobic and aerobic conditions in biological effluent treatment plants, the second way is the chemical precipitation with metal salts, mainly iron and aluminium sulphate.
