Removal of persistent organic pollutants from solid matrix by thermal desorption technology using conventional and microwave heating

  • Original language description

Thermal desorption presents very effective remediation technology for solid matrix contaminated by difficult degradable contaminants with high boiling point, however its basic drawback lies in high operating costs induced by huge energy consumption of process. In this work the basic mechanisms of contaminants desorption from prevailing solid materials (for example soil and building waste) was proved. Both kinds of samples were examined - spiked and real samples containing some pesticides (for example HCH, HCB, DDT), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Obtained results showed, that the major mechanism for more polar contaminants (chlorinated pesticides) is co - transport with water vapor. Consequently these contaminantsare removed from solid matrix under lower temperature than their boiling point, bringing significant energy saving. In addition to water vapor incidence, contaminants removal is supported by other carrier media, for example nitrogen. Micr
