Life cycle assessment of liquid epoxy resin in automotive industry
Original language description
Epoxy resin is a part of the coating systems, glues, electro-technical items, as well as those parts made of composites. As a material, it is quite difficult to recycle. The waste materials created during the disposal of wrecked cars do not have catalogue numbers. Data about the average amounts of coating materials and glues, based on epoxy resins, in lower-mid and mid-class vehicles was acquired with the cooperation of car manufacturers Toyota, Peugeot, Citroën, and Škoda Auto. Epoxy resin synthesis contributes to the total carbon footprint of the automotive industry. In the future, it will be important to focus on the measurements of the emissions caused by the burning of epoxy resins, the decomposition of epoxy resins in wastes, and an analysis of the potential possibilities for using epoxy resins as secondary materials. The producers of epoxy resins should participate in the development of the recycling technologies for use in the thermosetting matrices of composite materials.
