Use of yeast biosurfactants for remediation of soils contaminated by hexachlorocyclohexane
Original language description
Production, isolation and characterization of three types of yeast biosufactants (BS) and their application for hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH)-contaminated soil remediation has been investigated in this study. Biosurfactants produced by Yarrowia lipolytica,Candida bombicola and Debaryomyces hansenii were used to solubilize HCH resulting in mass solubilization ratio HCH/BS of 19.3 mg/g, 26.4 mg/g and 5.1 mg/g, respectively. Solubilization properties were also compared with two synthetic surfactant Triton X-100 and Tween 80. The results of flushing tests showed that the amount of adsorbed biosurfactant on soil is dependend on the content of the total organic carbon (TOC) and the ratio BS/soil ranged between 1- 40 mg/g. Biosurfactant remaining in soils after flushing significantly increased the dehydrogenase activity of naturally occurring soil microorganisms. Studied biosurfactant combined the effect of soil flushing and significant enhancement of biological activity in the treated soil.
