Use of a biomembrane module for biogas desulfurization
Original language description
Biogas produced during anaerobic treatment contains hydrogen sulfide (H2S) which is harmful to humans and the environment, and can cause corrosion problems; thus, limiting the potential use of biogas. Microaeration is one of the methods available for biogas desulfurization; it introduces small amounts of air into the reactor allowing simultaneous sulfide oxidation and the anaerobic treatment of wastewater. In this study, a lab-scale module with a biomembrane was used to biologically remove H2S from biogas. The biomembrane was developed by growing a biofilm on the surface of a silicone tube which was supplied with both air (inner part) and biogas (outer part). Experiments were carried out under batch conditions for 6 h and under transient state. Resultsshowed a removal efficiency of 98% after 6 h compared to 35% achieved by the bare silicone membrane. Final concentration of H2S in the biogas achieved by the biomembrane desulfurization was 94 mg m-3, which means the removal efficiency o
