The chapter explains the basic principles of activated sludge process and of the design and operation of secondary clarifiers. The impact of aeration basin equipment and operation on the performance of secondary clarifiers has been documented. The chapter also summarizes the influence of the constructional segment of secondary clarifiers on quality of final effluent and thickened separated sludge. The chapter also illustrate successful modifications in the construction of secondary clarifiers.
