On the importance of transesterification by-products during hydrogenolysis of dimethyl adipate to hexanediol
Original language description
Hydrogenolysis of dimethyl adipate over CuZnAl catalysts produces not only the desired hexane-1,6-diol, but also a number of by-products that have not been described so far. Catalytic experiments were carried out in a fixed bed reactor in the temperature range of 175–205 °C at hydrogen pressures of 10 and 16 MPa in the presence of a commercial CuZnAl catalyst. All reaction intermediates and products were identified by GC–MS and a reaction pathway of their formation via hydrogenolysis and transesterification was proposed. Upon evaluation of the role of the intermediates in dimethyl adipate conversion to hexane-1,6-diol it was established that the reaction by-products formed by transesterification affected the rate of hexane-1,6-diol formation.
