Are non-chromium catalysts efficient for ester hydrogenolysis?
Original language description
Typical catalysts used for ester hydrogenolysis are based on copper and chromium oxides. This combination is highly efficient, but problematic because of the production of hexavalent-chromium-containing liquid and solid waste that is difficult to dispose. Therefore, we studied if CuZnAl catalysts as non-chromium alternative could exhibit activity comparable to that of CuO-Cr2O3 being more eco-friendly. For this purpose, a series of CuZnAl catalysts was prepared by a co-precipitation method. The prepared CuZnAl, commercial CuZnAl and commercial CuO-Cr2O3 catalysts were tested in hydrogenolysis of dimethyl adipate. Experiments over CuZnAl catalysts showed DMA conversion comparable to that obtained over CuO-Cr2O3 under the tested reaction conditions (175-205 °C, 16 MPa).
