Mobile phone recycling from carbon footprint perspective

  • Original language description

An increasing amount of End of Life (EOL) mobile phones is a growing problem due to its rapid turnover and a small recycling rate. Here, we examine the carbon footprint of collection and recycling of EOL mobile phones. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was performed to evaluate EOL mobile phones treatment and recycling of embedded metals. As a reference scenario, the extraction and the refinery of primary materials was used. Our results shows, that the collection and recycling cause less impacts on global warming category compared to primary resources production. The major environmental impact is caused by PWBs treatment in a recycling facility, followed by batteries treatment. In the primary resource scenario, a significant impact is caused by the primary gold, followed by silver and copper production. According to LCA, the collection and recycling of mobile phones cause less environmental impacts on global warming category than extraction of primary resources.
