Reuse of treated wastewater in agricultural irrigation
Original language description
Many studies have been conducted on the use of recycled water for irrigation; however, these studies usually augment the irrigation scheme with fertilizer application or soil amendments. Can the use of treated wastewater only, promote plant growth? Will the use of recycled water negatively impact the soil’s chemical properties? The study, therefore, sought to find answers to these questions by irrigating cherry tomato and carrot plants with secondary effluent from an activated sludge treatment system (T1), and effluent from an ultrafiltration membrane treatment system (T2). Tap water was used as a control (T3). Plants were grown on loam soil in a greenhouse under climatic conditions similar to tropical climate. The obtained results reveal better growth of T1 and T2 relative to T3. Therefore, the use of recycled water for irrigation could promote plant growth; however, to boost crop production, fertilizer application or soil amendment may be required.
