Water reuse in the frame of circular economy
Original language description
Although the reuse of wastewater was practiced already by ancient civilizations, the barriers ofwater reuse, described in this chapter, prevented the large-scale water reuse for long time. Themain barriers for municipal wastewater recycling were mostly fear of infection in the past andalso micropollutants at present. However, the drivers for water reuse discussed also in the chapter, especially those connected with climate change trends, together with the enormous progress in water reclamation technologies and in quality parameters monitoring and mitigationmeasures like risk management plans cause that the water reuse is no longer only a conceptor idea of few scientists and visionaries. It is a real solution to our problems with water scarcityalready used worldwide. Actually, reclaimed water became a significant new water resource inmany countries around the Globe at the turn of the century.
