beta-Galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23) is the enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of terminal non-reducing b-D-galactose residues in b-D-galactosides. In special cases this enzyme is also able to transfer liberated galactosyl group on an acceptor.
