Removing of impurities from sugar extracts by membrane tehchniques
Original language description
The paper is focused on the optimisation of the sugar technology and deals with an improvement of beet juice quality using membrane techniques. The main objective of this study was to find a technology capable to reject the main part of elements, which increase amount of waste product (molasses) during sugar crystallization and ensure higher performance during filtration. Samples of raw juice were treated by multistep membrane filtration involving ultrafiltration on ceramic membranes (Membralox) and nanofiltration on flat polymeric membranes (Osmonics Desal, Hydranautics, Nitto Denko, Filmtec). Different conditions (linear velocity, pressure, temperature) have been tested to increase the permeate flux and thus the efficiency of nanofiltration. Rejection of sugars and ions retained by membrane were calculated and permeate flow was observed to evaluate efficiency of filtration. Nanofiltration tests showed significant differences in a separation effect of various membranes.
