Plant and bacterial transformation of polychlorinated biphenyls-toxicity of the products
Original language description
We used mono and dichlorobiphenyls as model compounds to investigate their transformation by plant cells and identify their products. Toxicity of initial compounds and metabolites was studied using different systems for ecotoxicity measurement. Except plant metabolites the toxicity of chlorbenzoic acids (microbial metabolites) was tested. Response of plant cells (hairy root system), microbial cells (Photobacterium phosphoreum) and mammalian cells (keratinocytes) was evaluated. The effect of the compounds was different with various derivatives. Generally products (hydroxychlorobiphenyls) were more toxic than initial PCBs.
