An engineering analysis of alkali hydrolysis of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene
Original language description
Alkali hydrolysis of TNT was studied at two temperatures (isothermal operation) and in several experiments where temperature was not controlled. The experimental data were used to determine the overall stoichiometry of TNT and hydroxyl ions, and to develop a simple kinetic model. A TNT-independent sink for hydroxyl ions accounts for system-specific loss of hydroxyl ions in control reactions. Activation energies of the individual reactions were estimated and the kinetic model was used to predict the experimental data in experiments. The experimental data and the kinetic model have been presented in this paper.
