Utilization and Processing of Waste Products from Distillery Industry
Original language description
Ethanol production is one of the major fermentation processes. Stillage is the aqueous by-product from the distillation of ethanol following fermentation of carbohydrates. The volume of stillage is inversely proportional to the concentration of ethanol. To produce 1 l of ethanol, however, approximately 10 to 15 liters of distillery slops are generated. Membrane separation technologies, where ceramic membrane played a key role, make possible to eliminate the stillage treatment steps using the conventional biological treatment processes and thus establish a zero-discharge system. In this new process liquid phase of stillage, pretreated by microfiltation and ultrafiltration, was to be reused as a technological water in the next fermentation in distillerytechnology and the solid matter after drying as a fertilizer or animal food. The aim of our study is to find the optimal separation conditions, such as pressure, temperature and membrane arrangements to minimize the fouling, facilitate me
