Monitoring of toxicity and DNA damage in plants exposed to environmental pollutants

  • Original language description

Plants are likewise exposed to many environmental pollutants that are globally dispersed through soil, aerial or aqueous pathways and serve as a sink for such chemicals. There are three primary benefits of using plants systems for ecotoxicity studies inaddition to microbial and animal biomarkers to monitor for environmental mutagens and carcinogens: (i) Plants can store and metabolise non mutagenic pollutants to mutagenic products that may be introduced into the human food chain, (ii) Environmental pollutants may evoke genotoxic responses in the phytosphere and damage global plant ecological systems, and (iii) Plants can be employed as sensitive in situ biological indicators for environmental toxicology. In the presented work we have focused on the genotoxicty of PCB in for plants growing in contaminated soil. Tobacco plants were cultivated in soil from dump site 8 weeks. Then parameters like leaf area, somatic mutation and total amount of PCB in soil and plant were tested. As a genot
