Biological effect of beta-glucans on the molecular level
Original language description
For decades beneficial biological effects of beta-glucans are known, but the principles of them have come to know only relatively recently. The main effect of beta-glucans, enhanced potential of the innate immune system, is related to their recognition by competent immunocytes. Recognition of beta-glucan is mediated through several transmembrane receptors: dectin-1, CR3, TLR2, TLR4, lactosylceramide and scavenger receptors, located on the surface of the white blood cells (macrophages, neutrophils, dendritic cells, natural killer cells, etc.). Binding of beta-glucan or its fragments to some of these receptors triggers a series of complicated signaling and reaction pathways, where cytokines, chemokines, enzymes and also certain genes play the irreplaceable role. In spite of the intensive research there are steps not yet rigorously described, but a general overview is progressively updated. As a result of these triggered responses, phagocytosis and intracellular oxidative burst take place
