SPECIATION OF MERCURY IN TERRESTRIAL PLANTS USING VAPOR GENERATION AND LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY-INDUCTIVELY COUPLED PLASMA MASS SPECTROMETRY
Original language description
A sensitive method for mercury speciation analysis in terrestrial plant was developed and optimised. Using simple vapour generation apparatus, which was coupled with conventional liquid chromatography and ICP-MS, a substantial increase of sensitivity wasachieved. Inorganic divalent mercury and methylmercury were separated by reversed-phase chromatography as thiolate compounds with 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME). Purospher(R) STAR RP-8e column (75?4 mm, 3 ?m) and the mobile phase containing 0.02 mol L-1 ammonium acetate, 0.2% (v/v) 2-ME and 1% methanol were used. The effluent was mixed firstly with hydrochloric acid solution (0.06 mol L-1) containing platinum as the internal standard and bismuth (30 ?g L-1) as a modifying agent and secondly with the reducingagent of sodium borohydride (0.016 mol L-1 in 0.005 mol L-1 NaOH). The generated volatile species were then introduced into ICP-MS by conventional solution nebulisation. Apart from considerable sensitivity enhancement induced by vapour g
