Effect of the Modified SPORL Process Conditions on Ethanol Production from Pre-treated Wheat Straw
Original language description
To enable microbial use of lignocellulose materials it is necessary to perform a chemical pre-treatment which releases cellulose and hemicellulose from its tight bond with lignin. Following that, a suitable cocktail of cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic enzymes can be applied for the digestion of cellulose and hemicellulose to fermentable sugars. SPORL (sulfite pretreatment to overcome recalcitrance of lignocellulose) method combines H2 SO4 and SO2 or bisulfite salts under acidic conditions (pH 2–4), at high temperature (160–180°C) for a short time. The main advantage of this process is lowering the formation of inhibitors derived from cellulose and hemicellulose, such as hydroxyl methyl furfural and furfural.
