Thraustochytrids are interesting microorganisms capable of effective accumulation of lipid fraction containing a major part of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), in particular omega-3 fatty acids in their biomass. The growth of model of two thraustochytrids Schizochytrium limacinum PA968 and Japonochytrium sp. AN4 was compared on waste brine and complex media. An experimental design was used to optimize the growth of two thraustochytrids (Schizochytrium limacinum PA968 and Japonochytrium marinum AN4) on different nitrogen sources (yeast extract, corn steep liquor, ammonium sulphate) supplemented into saline waste water from demineralization of cheese whey.
