Effects of an electric field on enzymatic reactions with immobilized enzymes
Original language description
Results of an experimental study of effects of electric fields on enzymatic hydrolysis of penicillin G in an electro--membrane reactor with the penicillin G acylase entrapped in a polyacrylamide gel membrane are presented. Remarkable increase (about 50-fold) of reaction rate due to electric current passing through the reactor was observed. Very good separation of main reaction product (6-aminopenicillanic acid) from the substrate stream was achieved. No excessive temperature rise due to the Joule heating was detected in the immobilized enzyme membrane. Penetration of substrate to the product stream was negligible.
