Separation properties of a polyethylene membrane and model calculations
Original language description
Pervaporation of liquid binary mixtures (methanol, ethanol, propan-1-ol, butan-1-ol, pentan-1-ol, hexan-1-ol with toluene) through the low density polyethylene membrane Bralen is complex process which is influenced by many factors. It turns out that thestrong non-ideal solubility and diffusivity behavior of measured liquid binary mixture components in polyethylene membrane and diffusive coupling effects play the dominant roles in the pervaporation process. Therefore the results based on the 1st Fick Law with constant diffusion coefficients are completely unsatisfactory. An essential improvement of the model description can be achieved by modified Maxwell-Stefan equations with one additional adjustable parameter. Application of the model requires not only the knowledge of dependence of the polymer density on concentration but also concentration dependence of diffusion coefficients of pure component in the membrane active layer and solubility coefficients. In order to obtain sorption da
