Liquid - liquid equilibria (LLE) in ternary systems nitromethane + water + 1-alcohols show theoretically interesting thermal behaviour. The aim of this work was to determine LLE in three ternary systems nitromethane + water + 1-alcohols (1-butanol, 1-hexanol, 1-octanol) at 298.15 K and to compare the results with equilibrium data predicted by the modified Wilson equation and the modified UNIFAC (Dortmund) contribution method. Two experimental methods have been employed to determine LLE in the ternary systems: the direct analytical method and the titration method. The experimental data were correlated on the basis of the binary system parameters obtained by means of the modified Wilson equation together with the ternary corrections. For the thermodynamic description of the binary subsystems our experimental and literature data on LLE together with available literature data on vapour - liquid equilibrium and excess enthalpy were employed.
