    Analysis of macro-instability of flow pattern induced tangential force affecting radial baffles in a stirred vessel

    Macro-instability (MI) of a flow pattern in stirred vessels has been recognised during last decade as a phenomenon that markedly influences all processes taking place in mixing vessels (homogenisation, suspendation, heat and mass transfer, chemical reactions etc.) The macro-instability is tightly linked to variations of the velocity field in the vessel and therefore it also exerts strong force effects on solid surfaces being in contact with the stirred liquid (vessel walls, cooling/heating coils, drafttubes, baffles etc.) We analyse the macro-instability related forces exerted by a stirred liquid in a standard cylindrical mixing vessel with pitched blade impellers or the Rushton turbine impeller by a combination of spectral analysis and proper orthogonal decomposition. Frequency of the MI-related part of the force and relative contribution of the MI-related force component to total force are determined and analysed.
