Effective interfacial areas of modern random packing types for absorption and distillation columns

The work presents interfacial mass transfer area measured in absorption column packed with following types of random metal packing: RMSR50; RMSR60; Raflux50; Hiflow50. The area is measured by the chemical method, which consists in absorption of diluted CO2 (1 vol% in air) into NaOH solution at 20ºC. The specific interfacial area, a, was evaluated from the over-all volumetric mass transfer coefficient KGa of CO2 chemisorption, for which the mass transfer coefficient value, KG, is known because it does not depend on the hydrodynamics of both phases. Geometric surface areas of the packing in the column, at, were evaluated from geometric surface area of one packing piece, Ap, and number of pieces in the column. The absorption experiments were performed at liquid loads from 10 to 100 m3/m2h and superficial gas velocities 0.487 and 0.725 m/s.
