Alternating current (ac) electrosmosis represents the flow of a liquid electrolyte resulting from Coulombic force in the electric double layer near the electrolyte-metallic electrode surface. In standard arrangement of an ac electroosmotic micropump thearray of planar microelectrodes is placed on one side (e.g. bottom) of the microchannel. Two general kinds of AC electroosmotic micropumps, the asymmetric and the traveling-wave, differ in the construction of electrode arrays. In this paper we suggesteda new top-bottom zig-zag arrangement. The arrays of electrodes are placed both on the top and on the bottom of a microchannel. Experimental realization can benefit from the interdigital design. Results of mathematical modeling based on Laplace-Stokes- Helmholtz-Smoluchowski-resistor-capacitor model show that most properties of traditional and new systems are comparable.
