Reaction Network Analysis of Photochemical Processes within Mesopause Region
Original language description
The photochemistry of the mesopause region entails a chemical oscillator or excitable system forced by short-wave solar radiation. A lumped periodically forced model of the chemical processes produces nonlinear behavior including period-doubling bifurcation cascades, complex subharmonic periodic oscillations and chaos. A method of reaction pathway analysis called the stoichiometric network analysis is applied to the underlying mechanism of ozone and hydrogen chemistry in themesopause and used to decompose the entire network into irreducible subnetworks and then apply linear stability analysis. Comparison of phase shifts of essential species indicated by linear stability analysis with simulations identifies subnetworks giving rise to oscillatory behaviour. One of the many such subnetworks is then identified with that causing the observed complex dynamics under periodic forcing.
