Simulation of single- and multistage separators in the petroleum industry using substitute mixtures
Original language description
In the petroleum industry the employment of various phase separators is very frequent. The simulation of such processes requires to deal with petroleum fractions treated as complex mixtures and to describe their behaviour at the phase equilibrium for various combinations of phases. The main interest is in the vapour-liquid equilibrium. The characterisation of petroleum fractions using substitute mixtures could be applied for this purpose. The traditional approach based on pseudocomponents is compared with the newer approach utilising substitute mixtures of real components. Particularly, it is shown, how the C7+ fraction can be alternatively characterised by real components with properties defined rigorously using component data retrieved from a suitable database instead of employing empirical estimation methods. The comparison is provided by several examples of the simulation of single- and multistage separation processes for typical mixtures occurring in the petroleum processing indus
