Modeling of the production of styrene-butadiene rubber by emulsion polymerization
Original language description
The first aim of this contribution is the demonstration of the methodology of the mathematical model construction. In the model the reaction mixture (emulsion) is formally divided into three phases: (i) droplets of monomer, (ii) polymer particles, and (iii) aqueous phase. Simplified reaction scheme of free-radical co-polymerization of styrene and butadiene is processed by the method of moments of chain-length and chain-branching distributions, the so-called method of polymer moments. Besides populationbalances of copolymer derived by the method of polymer moments the model considers number-density concentration of polymer particles. Mathematical model allows the prediction of the composition of the copolymer, average molar weights of polymer, frequency of branching of polymer chains and these parameters are empirically correlated with Mooney viscosity, which is the key parameter of produced SBR. Polymer particle size distribution is obtained by independent model based on the Monte Car
