Formation of high-impact polystyrene morphology
Original language description
This contribution presents a systematic study of evolution of heterophase morphologies of high impact polystyrene (HIPS). The model of the evolution of the so called salami morphology is based upon contra Fickian diffusion driven by the gradient of the chemical potential. The diffusion described by the gradient of chemical potential takes into the account the phase separation by mechanism of spinodal decompostion while parameter of interphase tension enables to describe the Ostwald rippening process. The target of our simulations, the salami morphology, can be characterized as follows: (i) polybutadiene (PB) particles with the size of several microns are distributed in the continuous polystyrene (PS) phase, and (ii) PB particles contain irregular sub-micron inclusions of PS. The salami-like morphology of HIPS was visualized by AFM
