Morphology characterization and evolution of high-impact polypropylene
Original language description
High-impact polypropylene (hiPP) is an important polymeric material with a wide range of applications particularly in automobiles industry. It is composed from porous isotactic polypropylene (iPP) matrix and from soft ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) built in the pores of iPP matrix. Subsequent processing of hiPP involving melting changes the morphology of hiPP. Main application properties of hiPP material such as its toughness and impact resistance depend strongly on the size and distribution of EPR domains in the iPP matrix. We succeeded with high-resolution AFM imaging of EPR distribution in the cross-section of a whole hiPP particle and demonstrated the uneven distribution of EPR. By mapping of EPR distribution in particles we can understand the process of EPR rubber growth within the matrix of iPP as the initial porosity of iPP matrix is much smaller than the final content of EPR rubber. Morphology of hiPP is systematically characterized by a suitable set of morphology descriptors.
