Synthesis and transport characterization of silica-coated alginate particles
Original language description
In this study we present silica coated alginate particles as a suitable candidate for application in the area of drug and other chemicals delivery. Alginate is a naturally occurring water polymer. Silica (SiO2) is an ideal host for biopolymer encapsulation since it is chemically and thermally stable and can limit the effect of the outside environment on the core of the particle. In this work we present a reproducible preparation process for the coating of alginate particles by a thin SiO2 layer using asol-gel technique. Alkoxysilane precursors TMOS (tetramethoxysilane) and APTrMOS (aminopropyltrimethoxysilane) have been used to generate an alginate/aminopropylsilicate/SiO2 complex. By means of detailed image analysis, we can obtain information about microstructure of dried coated as well as uncoated alginate particles and thus confirm the presence of a silica layer. Trough the drying kinetic, we investigate how SiO2 shell affects the permeability of the particle for water. The release
