Structure and properties of stimuli-responsive PNIPAM/Fe3O4 microcapsules

  • Original language description

In the present work, we have prepared composite PNIPAM/Fe3O4 microbeads and characterized their properties by several methods. Although these microspheres were prepared by inverse Pickering emulsion polymerization method, they do not have the same structure as other microcapsules prepared via this procedure. Normally Pickering microcapsules are spherical and their surface is coated by a nanoparticle layer, however microbeads prepared in this work had foam-like structure and the Fe3O4 nanoparticles weredispersed in the whole volume. Composite microbeads exhibited reversible shrinking/swelling behavior in the dependence of temperature changes similar to those known from pure PNIPAM microgels. Due to the presence of iron oxide nanoparticles it was possible to manipulate with microbeads by using extrenal magnetic field. The combination of thermoresponsive PNIPAM property and Fe3O4 superparamagnetic behavior can give the composite microbeads excellent properties useful in a variety of appl
