The presented paper deals with a study of flow macro-instabilities in mechanically stirred tank. The main aim of this work was to use a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation method to predict unsteady turbulent flow in a stirred tank including deformation of the free liquid surface. The Volume of Fluid method together with the Large Eddy Simulation technique for turbulent flow was used for CFD prediction of liquid flow using FLUENT 6.3 as a solver. The simulation output was processed by softwareTecplot 360 to post-process analysis and data visualization. Subsequently, the basic properties of found macro-instabilities such as their size, shape and pseudo-period of occurrence were determined. These results were compared with an experimental investigation of the free liquid surface fluctuation by a conductivity method. In conclusion the capability of computational fluid dynamics method to predict the motion of the free liquid surface and turbulent flow patterns in a stirred tank
