Experimental kLa data in dependency on the process parameters (e.g., impeller power, gas flow rate) obtained both for laboratory and for pilot-plant fermenter are presented for coalesescent (pure water) and fully non-coalescent (sulphate solution) batches. The dependence of kLa on the vessel scale is shown and the suitable terms are sought, which would be useful to establish correlations respecting the vessel scale. Examples of the suitable parameter are, e.g., the circumferential impeller blade velocity or the relative power down under aeration. Using these terms, the kLa correlations can be established, which can be used in the design of mechanically agitated fermenters of industrial scale.
