Fabrication of the secondary zinc-air battery
Original language description
The number of cars in the world is dramatically growing. Although car manufacturers place emphasis on ecology, this growth is still accompanied by a threat of increased emissions. Furthermore, the prices of fuels are increasing and there is a concern about the reserves of oil. Both of these problems may be strengthened by the instability in the oil producing regions. As a result, it seems necessary to diversify the sources of energy for vehicles. The currently developed alternative sources of energy arebiofuels, hydrogen and electricity. In this contribution, we shortly explain why classical oil based fuels cannot be significantly substituted without massive introduction of electric vehicles and introduce one of the most promising battery technologiesfor such vehicles, the zinc-air battery. We describe the chemistry of this battery and the construction of laboratory batteries used for the development of this technology.
