Micro- and nanocellular polymer foams ? insulation material of the future

  • Original language description

According to their structure, polymer foams can be divided into foams with open or closed pores (also called cells). If the pores or cells are smaller than 10 ?m or 100 nm, then we call such foams micro- or nano-porous/cellular, respectively. The small pore size and the high porosity provide the foams unique properties. Nano- and micro-porous polymer foams with closed pores can be used as heat or dielectric insulators with superior mechanical properties. Especially the thermal conductivity of nano-porous foams can be more than three times lower than that of standard foams. The use of these foams is thus material-saving. Nano- and micro-porous polymer foams with open pores have improved absorption and acoustic insulation properties. Therefore, they canbe used as membranes, acoustic insulators, in adsorption columns, and in tissue engineering as a carrying material. We prepared micro-cellular polystyrene foams using supercritical CO2 as the blowing agent. The foaming of impregnated poly
