Mechanically agitated gas-liquid contactors are frequently used in the chemical, food and biochemical industries such as fermenters and hydrogenation or chlorination reactors. However wide the usage of such vessels is, their design is not based on chemical engineering data but is still rather empirical. It is highly desirable to have a tool for the rational design of agitated gas-liquid contactors based on fundamental chemical engineering parameters transferable to other systems and operating conditions. In the cases of a liquid film-controlled process, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient, kLa, is the key parameter for the design. Experimental kLa data obtained both for laboratory and for pilot-plant fermenter are presented for non-coalescent (sulphate solution) batch, which represents most of the industrial batches.
