Diffusion in modified structures of an automotive catalytic layer
Original language description
In modern automotive exhaust gas catalytic converters with multiple coated layers, conversion of harmful gases can be limited by transport phenomena through the top layer with different function. It is possible to fine-tune this diffusion limitation withrespect to macroporosity, pore size distribution and layer thickness. We developed methodology for prediction of effective diffusivity and of possible diffusion limitation using detailed reconstruction of a porous layer structure and verified the modelwith CO and n-decane oxidation experiments over wide range of porosities (Dudak2014). But the proper reconstruction appeared to be difficult for layers with low macroporosities as the effect of pore connectivity to the effective diffusivity is increasing. Therefore, we prepared series of multilayer samples on flat metal foils with active Pt/?-Al2 O3 active layer at the bottom and inert ?-Al2O3 layer of varied morphology on top, yet with similar macroporosity and layer thickness.
