Decanol droplets chemotactic movement triggered by salts and hydroxides

  • Original language description

The movement of different objects in various external fields such as magnetic, electric or chemical has interested scientist for years. This paper describes the movement of decanol droplets in aqueous solution of sodium decanoate as a result of chemotaxis. Biological chemotaxis is a natural way for cells and organisms to perform an oriented movement in the chemical gradient. Positive chemotaxis occurs if the movement is in the direction of the growing concentration. If the movement is in the opposite direction, the chemotaxis is called negative. Artificial chemotaxis in the system decanol/decanoate/salt has similar properties, however, no cells or organism are used, only mentioned chemicals are involved. The trigger in this case is salt, namely different types of alkali salts has shown to serve as triggers for artificial chemotaxis (NaF, NaCl, NaI, KCl, KI, KBr). Further, it was proven that sodium hydroxide is able to initiate the movement as well, thus the system is pH-tactic as well. The movement mechanism is based on the Marangoni effect during which a mass is being transferred along an interface between two fluids due to surface tension gradient. Therefore, the surface tension was measured in dependence on the amount of salt in decanoate acid solution to study in influence of the surface tension on chemotaxis.
