Development of a system for electrochemical characterization of heterogeneous ion-exchange membranes

  • Original language description

Heterogeneous ion exchange membranes are widely used in electroseparation processes such as electrodialysis or electrodeionization. They provide selectivity towards the transport of charged ionic species in electrolytes by means of electrostatic interactions between the charge bound on/in the membrane and the mobile ions in the electrolytes. When connected in DC electrical field, these membranes exhibit very interesting electrokinetic behavior that reflected on current-voltage characteristics. The electrokinetic behavior, electrochemical properties and their relation to the composition of these membranes are the main objectives of our research. In this contribution we will present our approach to the experimental study of the aforementioned objectives. We developed an experimental system that allows measurement of basic electrochemical characteristics of these membranes and at the same time optical and fluorescent observation of processes occurring in the adjacent electrolyte layers. The system is designed in such a way that the membranes can be first characterized with micro X-ray computed tomography or energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Finding the links between the structure and the exhibited behavior is the main motivation of our work. The knowledge of this research will later be used for designing novel biosensors for point-of-care diagnostics that are based on the effects of biomolecules on the electrokinetics displayed by these membranes.
