Measurement of Gas Solubility in Hydraulic Fluids

  • Original language description

The solubility of gases in liquids is a subject of great practical and theoretical importance. Air solved in hydraulic fluids can negatively affect working performance of hydraulic dampers that are integral parts of many cars, trucks and machines. One of the targets of ongoing research is development of hydraulic damper without idle periods. Measurement of air solubility in hydraulic fluids is an important part of this research. An apparatus allowing to perform such measurement in temperature range form -5 to 85 oC and pressure range up to 5 MPa has been developed. The measurement is based on precise determination of pressure, volume and temperature (PVT) data during dissolution process. For this purpose special design of solubility cell was used. If there is no agitation, the liquid in the cell is in negligible contact with gas. Conversely, if the liquid is in under agitation, very close contact with gas is maintained. Gas solubilities in experimentally accessible temperature and pressure ranges of can be extended by regression of data by a model based on the Krichevskij-Kasarnovskij equation. In the contribution, designs of the solubility cell and whole apparatus are presented and experimental procedure is outlined. Some results showing good working performance of the apparatus are presented as well.
