Low-Density Polyethylene: Properties and Applications
Original language description
Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) belongs to the family of thermoplastic materials. LDPE is formed from the ethylene monomer units and its density is generally low due to the branching from the main chain and due to the lower portion of solid, impermeable crystalline parts. Properties of LDPE, such as stability, resistance and toughness, make this material suitable for various applications, especially in the packaging industry (containers, bottles, laboratory equipment, bags etc.). Nevertheless LDPE sorbs some amounts of gases and liquids. Therefore, the study of LDPE sorption phenomena of various penetrants constitutes an important issue. The detailed knowledge of the preferential sorption, i.e. the sorption of one component of the mixture, together with the total sorption of material under specific conditions and penetrant compositions can reveal new information regarding LDPE properties. And, consequently, the usage of LDPE in membrane separations is promoted.
