Preparation and characterization of solvatochromic organosilane-functionalized silica nanofibers as novel responsive materials

  • Original language description

New organosilane nanofibers modified with covalently anchored solvatochromic compounds were prepared and characterized. The organosilane nanofibers were prepared via an acid-catalysed sol-gel process followed by electrospinning and chemical modification with a solvatochromic substance bearing a triethoxysilane functional group. The solvatochromic response on the solid surface was studied in comparison with the prepared model substance studied in solution colorimetrically and by UV–Vis spectroscopy. The ranges of colour changes seen in the solution and on the solid surface were similar, i.e., the solvatochromic response of the substance was preserved even after it was anchored to a solid silica surface. The prepared nanofibers showed distinct colorimetric responses to various colourless analytes, i.e., water and organic solvents.
