Article analyses development of the refining industry during the last years which are suffering from low margins, over-capacity in certain regions (esp. Europe), high competitiveness from local and overseas players which results into necessity to consider instalation of bottom of the barrel technologies. 2 basic options are analysed: higher CAPEX and higher profitability and lower CAPEX and lower profitability with similar economic parameters (PI, IRR). Case study on Serbian refining industry case is commented when Serbian investor preferred cheaper option.
