Original colours - one of the keys to interpretation of mediaeval works of art
Original language description
The article is focused on highlighting the importance of studying original colours of mediaeval works of art. Over the centuries, the works have been subject of intentional or unintentional interventions as well as natural degradation. The usefulness of colour research for understanding the works of art and how it always enables us to push our limits is demonstrated on particular examples. Present outcomes fundamental for restoration process are presented on polychromy of two sculptures from the art collection of Regional Museum and Gallery in Most/Brüx located in the North-Western Bohemia. The studied sculptures are: a relief of Virgin and Child with Saint Anne from the decoration of north entrance hall of the Decanal Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary in Most, and Enthroned Madonna. Both are subject of study in the Czech-German cross-border project “The Art of Late Middle Ages in the Mining Region Ore Mountains (Krušnohoří/Erzgebirge)”.
