Interpretation of the painting the infant saint john the baptist with the lamb by melchiorre gherardini
Original language description
The Painting The Infant Saint John the Baptist with the Lamb, which is part of the collection of the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava, is currently attributed to Melchiorre Gherardini (1607–1675) of Milan, Italy, who was active at the beginning of the Baroque period. This unsigned and undated cabinet painting is instructive because of its material composition, technological build up, the history and nature of subsequent interventions, and finally because of the difficulty in determining its restoration method. Interdisciplinary research of this painting has revealed one unrecorded local specific feature applied in the Milan painting. The creation of its structure indicated lessons learned from the tradition of Netherlandish painting. The finding suggests the artist’s desire to adhere to the technology which could be applied by artists working in the circle of important patron Federico Borromeo under the influence of his interests. The identification of a different extent of degradation of individual sections of the color layer led to the designation of the character and date of execution of subsequent interventions, and enabled a virtual reconstruction of the original look and the establishment of the nature of the restoration interpretation of the painting.
