    What is data anyway?

  • Original language description

Questions about what data is and how it can be represented in research are essential to the project of legitimising experimental approaches to data representations (Hogan & Hornecker, 2017; Jansen et al, 2015; Karyda, Wilde & Kjærsgaard, 2020; Lupton, 2017) and, more broadly, to differentiate social science and humanities research from the physical and life sciences (Brinkmann, 2012, 2014). Such questions are of particular relevance to artistic research, which argues for an expansion of experimental methods to capture other ways of knowing and being in the world, encompassing sensual, metaphysical, speculative and more-than-human onto-epistemologies that are situated, ephemeral and mutable (de La Bellacasa, M.P., 2017; Bencke & Bruhn, 2022; Borgdorff, 2006, 2009; Dolejšová, et al., 2020; 2024; Light et al., 2024; Tomico et al., 2024; Wilde & Lenskjold, 2023). Our research recognises the inadequacies of dominant conceptualisations of data as a form of reliable truth-telling, and the need for alternatives to push back against this hegemonic stance. Rather than rely on quantitative representations, we explore ‘feral’ (Dolejšová et al. 2023) and ‘anecdotal’ (Wilde, In Press) data as propositional forms, capable of encompassing the flux, flow, and mutability of relational multispecies experience that unfolds dynamically over space and time. Feral data embodies the untamed wildness of multispecies ecosystems, offering messy, sensory-rich alternatives to quantitative data about place (Dolejšová et al., 2023); anecdotal data leans on the human need for storytelling to recognise ourselves in the world around us. These data characterisations may take the form of, for instance, multispecies tattoos, narrated stories, performed eco-rituals, baked goods, or unfolding meals, co-constructed, performed and shared.
