Participation at the OUT / SITe conference, “The Sculptor’s Symposia Series and Cold War Artistic Exchange”, in Bern, from September 18th to 19th, 2025, with a presentation titled “Symposium Chmelnice Mutějovice 1983”. The search for a place to exhibit alternative culture resulted in the early 1980s in absurd projects such as the Hop-Field Symposium near Mutějovice that took place in a field after the hops harvest, i.e. in a space marked by poles and wires. It brought together a number of artists who were at that time working with alternative ways of creating art and site-specificity, as well as those for whom leaving behind their studios for the fresh air and a chance to work in a broader collective was a welcomed change from the isolation that was common during the normalization years. About the conference: The conference initiates research into the phenomenon of outdoor sculpture symposia. Invented in St. Margarethen, Austria, in 1959, this format has since seen sculptors relocate their studios outside. It was adopted in West Germany, the GDR, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Switzerland. The first meeting took place in an abandoned quarry, i.e. outside of any institutional setting. The symposium format allowed artists to experiment with new display concepts for sculpture ‘en plein-air’ and functioned as a gateway for artists from different political systems. The thesis is that on such non-institutional ground, concepts of collaboration could be developed beyond the demarcation lines of world politics. The workshop builds on two current debates in the humanities: how to preserve and gather (digital) cultural heritage in decentralised open source systems?
